Firstly, welcome to the Maffick. The above image is a work of my own creation, assembled to meet a particular class assignment. Using only text (which we were encouraged to manipulate), we were to take a factual sentence and attempt to convey any number of levels of connotative meaning held within.
Ultimately, I wanted my piece bring home to the viewer the very real decisions that the ever increasing number of uninsured in our country face every day. The original sentence did a good job of connecting uninsured in our country to the poor around the world, but I wanted to draw this connection out even further. I wanted to visually represent the poor and the uninsured suffering in same way, hence the blood hued shadows mingling across the distance of the piece. Likewise, the shadowy r.i.p behind the stay home emphasizes the grim nature of the choice (of for some the only option) to go without insurance in our current system. Notice also that the dollar sign, while easily set apart by its sharp, distorted nature, is also the only piece with a drop shadow in it’s expected place. This serves to further emphasize how hostile and unachievable current costs for care can be.
